April Showers bring May Flowers in Athens, Texas

April showers bring May flowers. The rain has really benefitted our community. Flowers are bloomin’ and pollen is flyin’ everywhere. Bluebonnets, azaleas, and dogwoods are showing their beautiful colors. With that in mind, we have some special events in Athens this month.

Outdoor Fools Day will be at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center on Saturday, April 4th. Experts in camping, fishing, archery, campfire cooking and more will teach hand-on-skills in a day of family-oriented outdoor fun. This event is being compared as a mini-Outdoor-Expo that Austin hosts each year.

For those who have a green thumb, or wishing they had a green thumb we have two events for you. The Garden Club will have a Plant Auction at the Arboretum on Wednesday, April 15th. The Master Gardeners Spring Conference will be at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center on Thursday, April 16. Elvin McDonald, former editor of Better Homes & Gardens will be the guest speaker.

For the Music Lovers:
- The Greencards will be here for one night only at Lakeview Lodge on Friday April 3rd.
- Drew Smith and his Lonely Choir will be at Image Warehouse on April 18th.
- The Perry’s will perform at Lifeway on April 18th.
- TVCC Wildcard Swing Orchestra will perform at Lakeview Lodge on April 24th.
- TVCC Symphonic Band and Choirs will perform at the Cain Center on April 26th.

Henderson County Performing Arts will perform Over the River and Through the Woods this month.

For Horse & Rodeo Lovers:
Tulley Productions Team Roping, 40+ championship Team Roping, Lone Star Cutting Horse Show, Texas Palomino Horse Show, and don’t forget the PRCA Rodeo on April 24th & 25th. AVIP is selling tickets for the rodeo. Come by and get them – adults $10 in advance $12 at the gate; children are $5. Each night, with the purchase of a ticket to the rodeo, you are eligible to win a pair of Men’s boots and a pair of Ladies boots valued at $200 each courtesy of Lone Star Western & Casual Wear. You must be present to win.

There will be an Art Show at the Cain Center on April 24th & 25th.

New event in Athens: The Scuba Park located at 500 N Murchison will be having an Open-Air Flea Market every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will be open from 8am – dusk. It is free to observers and parking is free too. Vendor booths will be 10 x 10 and $8 a day. No animals allowed. Contact the Athens Scuba Park for more information.
